MRG Live Presents: Tony Molina Band + The Softies

Doors 7:00 Show 8:00PM

Tony Molina Band:

Northern California native Tony Molina has a restless, multi-faceted musical personality. He got his start playing in hardcore bands, but over time developed two distinct styles that are very far removed from that sound. Initially under the name Ovens, then as a solo artist, he crafts bite-sized chunks of melodic pop that can be broken into two sub-headings: quiet acoustic guitar-led ballads and noisy electric songs that sound like Teenage Fanclub with J Mascis and the Fastbacks' Kurt Bloch spearheading a dual guitar attack.

The Softies:

The Softies are a guitar-oriented duo, based in the Pacific Northwest, consisting of Rose Melberg (Tiger Trap, Go Sailor, Knife Pleats) and Jen Sbragia (All Girl Summer Fun Band), who are known for their minimal yet shimmering approach to pop music. They debuted in early 1995 with "Loveseat," a single issued on the Slumberland label; their gorgeous debut LP It's Love followed later in the year on K records. After a self-titled 10" LP on Slumberland Records in 1996, the Softies returned to K in early 1997 to issue their sophomore effort, Winter Pageant. Fall 2000 saw the release of their third album, Holiday in Rhode Island, also on K Records.

Listening to The Softies feels like peeking into a diary, with no personal detail spared. Their two delicately jangling guitars and crystalline voices never needed anything else, their minimalist blueprint succeeds in filling every single space.

All Girl Summer Fun Band:

Portland’s All Girl Summer Fun Band has been in existence now for 25 years! Pretty impressive considering the original plan was to only be a band for the summer of 1998. They decided it was too much fun to stop then and have decided that it’s still way too much fun to stop now!

While the original member lineup did change a bit (bassist, Ari Douangpanya, left in 2005 to focus on raising her son), the band has continued on as a three-piece consisting of Jen Sbragia, Kathy Foster and Kim Baxter. The remaining members released their third full length album, Looking Into It, on their own label in 2008. They played a few shows in support of the album but then their lives got busy, causing them to put AGSFB on hold. Since then Foster has been focused on her other music projects (The Thermals, Roseblood, Hurry Up, Slang). Baxter has been recording solo music, running a film production company with her husband, and raising her son. Sbragia has been working as a graphic designer, playing music with her other band, The Softies, and raising her two children. The three always knew, however, that when they had time, they would return to playing AGSFB shows and perhaps even record and release more music together. As long as it’s still fun, AGSFB will always be around!

Mo Trooper:

Mo Troper is truly one of a kind, and that’s never been more apparent than on his fifth full-length, the winkingly titled MTV. Arriving hot on the heels of his 2021 full-length, Dilettante, the album finds the Portland, OR-based power pop extraordinaire diving further into home-recorded immediacy to make a record that feels like a strikingly direct conduit to the world of Mo–where heartbreak, hilarity, and hooks all go hand-in-hand.
